One way by being seconds away from advancing to the second round of the EFL Cup, the Baggies stumbled at the dying seconds after Derby scoring from a late free kick and then going on to win on penalties.

The first game of the season played under the lights on a very warm Tuesday evening in August, the Carabao Cup has sprung into action as we were very close to beating a Derby County side.

I think it was undeserving to lose the game overall, has we were in control throughout the 90 minutes and somehow was a pain to see us crash out following a penalty shootout.

There were a number of changes to the line up with Academy graduate Alex Williams making his debut for the club and summer signing George Campbell making his first start.

The Baggies made three early chances, with Ousmane Diakite’s long range header that was saved, Isaac Price saw his attempt saved and Williams nodded into the side netting.

Ryan Mason’s side finished the half as the strong side, with Price went close to breaking the deadlock, seeing his shot narrow, leaving the game goalless at half-time.

In the 67th minute, Heggebo broke the deadlock as the Norwegian converted well after Price knocked-down Styles crossfield pass inside the area.

Derby then put late pressure on us and then scored in the dying seconds as Joe Ward’s free-kick put the game to a penalty shootout.

Then Derby went on to win the penalty shootout 3-2 by securing their place in the next round of the competition.

West Brom 1-1 Derby County (Derby win 3-2 on Pens)

West Brom: Wildsmith, Williams, Taylor, Campbell, Styles, Diakite, Mowatt, Fellows (Wallace 69), Price (Molumby 79), Johnston (Grant 87), Heggebø (Maja 79).

Derby County: Vickers, Forsyth, Weimann (Adams 63), Goudmijn, Ozoh (Osborn 63), Elder, Rooney, Ward, Sanderson (Batth 63), Brown (Jackson 69), Clark (Wheeldon 63).

A bad way to go out in that situation as we was in control all game now the EFL Cup is over for another season our main focus turns to Wrexham on Saturday in the Championship.
