Welcome to the Season Review as it’s that time of the year to review the season on a post, from our great start to our drawing run, Carlos Corberan moving to Valencia on Christmas Eve and Tony Mowbray’s Dreadful Saturday’s that led him gone with two games to go that denied us all but importantly a top six finish.

2024-25 Season

August

It started in August with our Pre-Season fixtures away at Cambridge on a Friday night that saw us lose 1-0 by a penalty and the next day was the awful one against Birmingham with a 4-1 defeat where we thought it’s a long season ahead.

This was all forgotten once the Championship season started at QPR with a Josh Maja hat trick secured an opening day win for the Baggies. A few days later we had an early exit in the Carabao Cup as Fleetwood beat us 2-1 before our return to The Hawthorns with a goalless draw to Leeds United.

It was another great away day for the Baggies after they defeated Stoke City with goals from Karlan Grant and Josh Maja to secure a 2-1 victory before our 1-0 home win with Jayson Molumby getting a winner over Swansea.

September

After the international break in September, the Baggies travelled to Portsmouth and went top of the league most of that month with a 3-0 victory over Pompey on the South Coast where this was probably the best game of the season. Then a week later we narrowly beat Plymouth Argyle with a Josh Maja goal that has kept the Baggies at the top of the table.

This great run to the season went downhill after a 3-2 defeat over Sheffield Wednesday at the end of the month that started our winless run until November.

October

The month started in an evening game at The Hawthorns as we welcomed Middlesbrough and our second concessive defeat happened with a 1-0 home defeat with Hayden Hackney strike the Baggies off the top of the Championship table. Millwall happened a few days later that saw a goalless draw before an October International break.

Oxford United was the early kick off on a Saturday in Mid-October that almost saw Karlan Grant gaining us all three points before a late equaliser for Oxford. That month also saw further goalless draws to Blackburn and Cardiff.

November

The start of the month was a Friday night game away at Luton Town, Josh Maja took the lead before half time then we saw another equaliser by Luton’s Chong that gave the Baggies their 5th successive draw and winless in 7. We then saw Burnley at The Hawthorns on a unusual Thursday night under the lights that ended another draw before the Baggies finally won a game at Hull City on Remembrance Sunday.

Norwich City then came to The Hawthorns in what was an entertaining game with goals from Mason Holgate and Josh Maja that gave the Baggies another point in an frustrating months of draws with further similar results away to Sunderland and Preston.

December

December was a busy month for the Baggies as we started off with another 2-2 draw at The Hawthorns over Sheffield United, before finally seeing a win against rivals Coventry City with a 2-0 win that puts the Baggies into the play-offs despite drawing so many games in the last 2 months.

Watford away was a frustrating Sunday afternoon that saw us defeated 2-1 before we done Bristol City by a Mikey Johnston brace before Christmas.

Around Christmas we said goodbye to Carlos Corberan after he exited to join Valencia on Christmas Eve then Chris Brunt took over as interim manager for the Derby County match on Boxing Day that saw the newly promoted side beat us 2-1. We then went to another away game against Sheffield United a few days later where we earnt an excellent point with a 1-1 draw to end 2024.

January

We welcomed 2025 with a 3-1 win over Preston North End at The Hawthorns with a Josh Maja brace. The Baggies had another game where it was the 4th in 9 days away to Swansea City in the early kick off where Joe Allen stole all three points from us to secure a draw in South Wales.

Then we went into the FA Cup against Premier League side Bournemouth and it was a battering where they went on to beat us 5-1 in the Third Round. Before the Stoke City clash news came out that Tony Mowbray become our next manager at The Hawthorns and his wait was until the Middlesbrough game in midweek but we drew to Stoke 1-1 before Mowbray saw his first game in charge since 2009 with a 2-0 defeat away to Middlesbrough.

Mowbray started off his dreadful Saturday’s in style with a 5-1 hammering to Portsmouth in his first home game at The Hawthorns since 2009.

February

February 1st was Plymouth away and that was a early start it was looking good when Molumby scored but a Plymouth penalty with Ryan Hardie scoring gave them hope to secure Argyle all three points and was an embarrassing game with a 2-1 defeat to bottom side Plymouth.

The next week was a memorable moment of the season when Jayson Molumby scored a dramatic last minute winner over Sheffield Wednesday to earn us a 2-1 at The Hawthorns.

Few days later turned into frustration after a 2-0 home loss to Blackburn Rovers that saw the Baggies drop out of the play-offs. After this game was Millwall away another day that didn’t go well after missing most of the game and both goals due to a protest in London but saw us gaining a point down in London before winning our next game to Oxford United 2-0 with a John Swift late minute goal.

March

First day of the month with an away trip to Leeds United where this was a great day out from singing at the Pub Stop all the way till the end of the game, this was a game where nobody expected anything out of this one as Leeds was running away to get promoted. This started off the coach manics from every away game since cause any fan just loves to sing before the game it was a great game and a well earnt point in Yorkshire with a Darnell Furlong header.

The next game saw us run out 1-0 winners at home to QPR following a Adam Armstong penalty that gained us three points before a Tuesday night away trip to Burnley that saw an excellent free kick from John Swift but wasn’t enough as the Baggies gained another point on the road. Hull City at home the Baggies looked certain to win with an Isaac Price goal before the Tigers got a late equaliser before the International break.

After the international break the Baggies travelled to Norwich in the last part of the Championship Season a late Josh Sargent goal for the Canaries gave us a heartbreak and meaning we needed to push on throughout April.

April

This month was an awful month for the Albion, this started bad when Sunderland beat us 1-0 at The Hawthorns that dropped us out the play-offs places and needed to beat Bristol City a few days later and another dramatic late defeat again with a Bristol City late goal by Haydon Roberts meant it was the end for our play offs hopes if we did beat Bristol that night we would of actually finished 6th.

After the devastating night at Bristol we faced Watford at The Hawthorns that put our play-offs hopes back alive again with goals from Karlan Grant and Mikey Johnston gave us all the three points meant we was hoping our game over Coventry City is a crucial one.

Coventry on Good Friday that was the game we had to win we would of been back in the Play-Offs but another defeat on the road as the Sky Blues scored early on in both halves meant on Easter Monday our hopes for promotion was all but over with a embarrassing 3-1 home defeat to Derby County that spelled the end for Tony Mowbray’s three-month stay at The Hawthorns.

We then travelled to Cardiff City on our last away game of the season and the result send the Bluebirds relegated into League One with a goalless draw.

May

Only one game in May and that was Luton, it was a great game to end the season and Daryl Dike’s first start and his first goal in two years that also made sure Luton Town got relegated to League One in what was their 2nd successive relegation.

What a quick season it was went in a flash these last 9 months but it didn’t go as well as expected as we missed out on the play offs by 4 points or we would of finished 6th if we actually went on to beat Bristol City in April. Now lets go through where to see what the best game of the season is, worst game of the season, player of the season, improved

That is what happened throughout the last 9 months on the pitch and now it is time where I go through what the best game was, worst game, player of the season, improved player of the season, goal of the season, signing of the season and my best away day of the season was.

Best Game of Season- Portsmouth 0-3 West Brom

The best game of the 2024-25 season has to be Portsmouth in middle of September where we secured a 3-0 victory that put us top of the Championship.

An early Josh Maja goal and a brace from Alex Mowatt made this a great day on the South Coast as we destroyed the newly promoted side from League One and at that time we did look like promotion contenders.

Worst Game of Season- Bristol City 2-1 West Brom

There are so many to choose from the Derby game at home, Plymouth away in February and many others along the list. I would say the Bristol City game in April on a Tuesday night is the worst game of the season this result was the reason we didn’t end up in the top six but a late dramatic win for Bristol put them into 6th and did make us finish in 9th.

The atmosphere was poor when the goal for Bristol City came in and that resulted with us having work to do after a shocking run in this time of season.

Best Player of The Season- Torbjørn Heggem

Torbjørn Heggem’s consistency, leadership, and defensive prowess made him Baggies Talk’s Best Player of the Season. He delivered rock-solid performances, anchoring the back line and inspiring confidence. His composure under pressure and ability to read the game turned tight matches in West Brom’s favor.

Most Improved Player- Karlan Grant

Since returning from his loan at Cardiff, Karlan Grant has been a revelation—sharper, more confident, and tactically matured. His goals, energy, and defensive graft earned him Baggies Talk’s Most Improved Player. He won over the fans this season with fans echoing with “Karlan F**ing Grant, ole ole! since his goal at Oxford United.

Signing of The Season- Isaac Price

Isaac Price is Baggies Talk’s Signing of the Season after joining in January. Composed, creative, and relentlessly driven, he quickly became a midfield engine for West Brom. His impact was clear, earning four Man of the Match awards under Tony Mowbray. A smart signing who proved his value instantly and is the one to watch next season.

Best Home Game- West Brom 5-1 Portsmouth

Baggies Talk’s Best Home Game of the Season goes to the stunning 5–1 demolition of Portsmouth. It marked the start of Tony Mowbray’s Dreadful Saturdays—but no one expected it when the surprise lineup dropped. What followed was pure domination: slick football, ruthless finishing, and The Hawthorns bouncing. A day that shocked, thrilled, and set the tone.

Best Away Game- Leeds 1-1 West Brom (Leeds Away)

Baggies Talk’s Away Day of the Season has to be Leeds United, despite the result it was an unforgettable day. The atmosphere was mental from the pub stop with non-stop singing that carried all the way to Elland Road.

This marked the beginning of the legendary Coach Manics, with fans belting out songs for their passengers. Inside the ground, the noise was relentless proper support and the birth of “We’re West Bromwich Albion, f**ing hate the Villa and the Wolves” chant. A day that reminded everyone how special away days can be.
