Not the afternoon we all wanted as we now wait to secure a play off position for another week after suffering a 1-0 defeat to the hands of Sunderland.

Brandon Thomas Asante sent off during the game.

The Baggies started off the better team as we had a number of opportunities when Alex Mowatt couldn’t find the opener and Patterson had shots saved by Diangana and Furlong in the first half.

Before half time, it looked bad for the Baggies when Brandon Thomas Asante was shown a red card after being booked that will see us play with 10 men.

Then, later on during injury time, Sunderland found the opener to create misery when Ekwah scored and earned them the lead at half time.

Adam Reach and Semi Ajayi were introduced at half-time, and Jed Wallace and John Swift came on around the hour mark, with the latter quickly firing inches wide in their search for a leveller.

Fellow substitute Matt Phillips threatened twice, too, volleying one attempt off-target, and not quite connecting properly with a header.

In the second half we had Adam Reach and Semi Ayayi come on then Jed Wallace and John Swift on the 60th minute with them trying to find the equaliser for us.

Matt Phillips was close with volleying one attempt off target, and his header failed to prevent us from a comeback. In the end, it was Sunderland who claimed all three points and a disappointing day indeed for the Baggies who will wait another week to seal a place in the playoffs.

Up next for the Baggies is an away trip to Leicester next Saturday lunchtime where Sunderland take on Millwall at The Stadium of Light.
