The Baggies fell to a 2–1 defeat at a packed Hillsborough, handing Sheffield Wednesday only their second win of the season and leaving Albion with plenty to rue. It’s the kind of result that underlines the work still needed behind the scenes in the summer.

The Baggies almost scored in the early stages where Heggebo shot in behind the Wednesday back line before Ollie Bostock effort was cut out before it could trouble Pierce Charles.

Jamal Lowe was first to test the goalkeeper, a deflected cross fell at the feet of the Jamaica international who couldn’t adjust his body quick enough to prevent Max O’Leary from smothering the effort.

It was Nathaniel Chalobah who broke the deadlock for the hosts, cleverly flicking the ball past Max O’Leary to grab their opener.

That goal proved to be the turning point, shifting momentum firmly in Wednesday’s favour and causing real misery on the field for the Baggies. The hosts soon doubled their advantage, with captain Liam Palmer on hand to apply the finishing touch just five minutes before half-time.

Lowe went close again when he rattled the post, but substitute Karlan Grant grabbed a late consolation for the visitors, netting the final goal of the match and bringing Albion’s 2025/26 campaign to a disappointing close.

Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 West Brom

Goalscorers for Sheffield Wednesday: Nathaniel Chalobah, Liam Palmer

Goalscorers for West Brom: Karlan Grant

The 2025-26 has come to a close with a defeat at Hillsborough a side that started the day on -3 points and they now ended the season on 0 points, the Baggies was on a 10 game unbeaten run following this and it is disappointing to lose to a side who have been struggling all season. However the season is now over and there may be positives in the summer to see who could be gone from The Hawthorns and who would be coming to the club before the season starts again in August.

I would like to thank everyone who has supported Baggies Talk over the season and it’s been 2 years since doing these match previews and reviews and there be more content over the summer months regarding transfer news and other news surrounding the Albion. I hope you all enjoy the Summer and the upcoming World Cup.
